If you are wondering just exactly what chakras are and where they are located in the body, here is a brief overview of the most common chakras known to Yogis and Yoginis and some excellent Yoga poses to help clear, balance and strengthen them.


What Exactly are Chakras?

According to Wikipedia, chakras, in the Hindu metaphysical tradition and other belief systems, are centers of Prana (life force energy). Our chakras correspond to vital energy points in our physical body. Various texts and teachings present different numbers of chakras, however, Yogis and Yoginis are most familiar with seven chakras. Each chakra is associated with a unique physical, mental and spiritual energy systems in the body. 



Chakra Means Wheel

Chakra Yoga

Chakra Yoga uses specific poses to focus the practitioner on clearing, balancing and strengthening each of their chakras. During Chakra Yoga practice, Yogis and Yoginis focus on and connect to each of their charkas, from root to crown, often uniting them with the heart chakra and visualizing positive energy to the practitioner and out to the world. 

If you are wondering just exactly what chakras are and where they are located in the body, here is a brief overview of the most common chakras known to Yogis and Yoginis and some excellent Yoga poses to help clear, balance and strengthen them.


Tree Pose

Root Chakra

The Root Chakra is located at the base of the spine and represents our connection to the physical world or Earth and when open and connected brings the Yoga practitioner a sense of grounding and stability.

The Root Chakra is represented by the colour Red and the Red Lotus.

A chakra yoga pose to help connect and ground this Chakra is the tree position while bringing the attention to connecting to and grounding with Earth. You may wish to accompany this pose with an affirmation such as “I AM safe, secure and have everything I need”.


Seated Kneeling Pose

Sacral Chakra

The Sacral Chakra is located in the sacrum and corresponds to the sexuality and creativity and is symbolised by a lotus with six orange petals.

The seated kneeling pose is great for opening and balancing this chakra and may be accompanied with an affirmation such as “I AM a loving, creative and sexual being. My body is sacred”.


Standing Prayer Pose

Solar Plexus Chakra

Located in the abdomen area, the Solar Plexus Chakra is bright yellow is represented by the 10 petal lotus and also the Sun. This chakra represents the the center of our core power and will.

A great Yoga pose for the this chakra is the Standing Prayer Pose while breathing into the Solar Plexus area.

You may wish to accompany this pose with the affirmation  “I AM strong and confident and have all the tools I need to support me on my life’s journey.”


Seated Lotus Pose

Heart Chakra

The Heart Chakra is located in the chest area and is symbolised by a green 12 petal lotus.

The energy for this chakra is love, compassion and forgiveness.

To open and balance your heart try the Seated Lotus Pose which may be accompanied by these affirmations “I AM loving kindness. I AM compassionate and forgiving. I AM loved, loving and lovable”.


Cobra Pose

Throat Chakra

The Throat Chakra is depicted by a blue 16 petal lotus flower and is located in the throat area. It is our communication centre. By tuning into this chakra we can learn to communicate clearly and with integrity.

A Chakra Yoga Pose you might try for this chakra is the Cobra Pose accompanied by the affirmation: “I speak my truth with compassion and integrity”.

Connecting our Throat Chakra to our Heart Chakra helps us
to communicate our truth with love and compassion.


Warrior Two Pose

Third Eye Chakra

The Third Eye Chakra is related to the pineal gland and is located between the brows. It is often referred to inner sight and higher consciousness or enlightenment and clairvoyance.

The Third Eye Chakra is depicted by the indigo or purple lotus with two petals and can be visualized during meditation.

To balance and strengthen this chakra try practicing the Warrior Two Pose accompanied by the affirmation “ I see the Universe in all things.”


Warrior One Pose

Crown Chakra

The Crown Chakra is located at the top of the head and is depicted by the 1,000 petal multi-color lotus and is known as the chakra of pure consciousness, this chakra relates to divine guidance, unity with universal intelligence and our free will.  

A chakra yoga pose for to open and balance the crown chakra is the Warrior One Pose accompanied by the affirmation “I AM One with the Universe and all beings and am divinely guided and protected”.
