Yoga vs Pilates?

What is the difference between Yoga and Pilates, many ask. According to Canadian Living Magazine, “the difference between Yoga and Pilates reflects the difference between Eastern and Western cultures. Both systems build strength and flexibility; the difference between them is not only physical, but also philosophical”.

Yoga is Based on the Eastern Philosophy of Unity

Yoga is based on the Eastern philosophy of the connection or unity of the body, mind and spirit. As you engage energy with the intention to move it freely throughout your body, mind and spirit you become more relaxed, grounded and flexible. Stress, tension and other mental and physical blockages may stem the flow of energy resulting in rigidity and even pain. The benefits of regular Yoga practice are increased strength and flexibility and reduced stress, tension and even weight loss. Meditation and proper breathing techniques are also key elements of any Yoga practice resulting in a greater sense of well-being for its practitioners.

Pilates Emphasises the Physical

Pilates emphasises the physical aspects of the practice. Joseph Pilates developed Pilates as a method for injured soldiers returning from war to rehabilitate and has become widely practiced in the west.

Pilates focuses on core strength exercises by working the muscles in abdomen and spine and isolating and engaging them effectively. Pilates, like Yoga, is generally practiced on a mat and can also incorporate equipment and props. Pilates Exercises, like Yoga, incorporates props such as Pilates Mats, Exercise Balls and Straps, and can easily be practiced at home. Proper Breathing is Core to Both Disciplines

Proper breathing techniques are core to both disciplines, Yoga and Pilates. Like Yoga, Pilates breathing techniques help reduce stress and oxygenate the bloodstream, muscles and brain, thus improving mental clarity, stamina and health.

Yoga vs Pilates - or Both?

If you are already experiencing the benefits of practicing Yoga but want to strengthen your core muscles, try adding Pilates to your Practice, as my chiropractor recommended. Pilates can be practiced alongside your Yoga routine to help you build your core strength, increase your stamina, and improve your balance, which is especially important for Boomers like me.

Try alternating your Yoga Exercises with Pilates to get the best of both worlds. Whatever you decide, Yoga vs Pilates, or both, enjoy the journey.
